Diff Stage vs Chromatic: choosing evidence for Laravel PR reviews
Compare Diff Stage's Pest recording workflow with Chromatic's visual testing approach, including integrations, review evidence and team fit.

Choose Diff Stage when you want reviewers to watch an existing Pest browser journey and compare it with approved default-branch footage. Choose Chromatic when you want automated visual comparisons of captured UI states through a supported integration. Use both when the journey and its visual states need separate review.
Using Laravel does not decide this for you. What decides it is the tests you maintain and the decisions your reviewers need to make.
Diff Stage wrote this comparison. Chromatic details come from Chromatic's official documentation. The checkout example below shows how to evaluate each approach. It is not a completed head-to-head benchmark.
Start with the evidence you need#
Take a Laravel checkout PR that changes a declined-payment message and moves its retry control. The required outcomes don't change. The app shows the decline, allows another attempt and shows the successful confirmation.
The reviewer has two questions. Does the changed error state look right? Does the sequence through decline and retry make sense?
Chromatic's visual testing helps with the first. Diff Stage's recorded journey helps with the second. Both only work if your tests reach the behaviour you care about. Neither one answers the other question.
| Your current need | Start by evaluating |
|---|---|
| Review existing Pest browser journeys on a PR | Diff Stage |
| Detect visual differences in selected UI states | Chromatic's supported visual testing integration |
| Review an existing Storybook component suite | Chromatic |
| Compare the error/retry sequence with recorded default-branch behaviour | Diff Stage |
| Enforce visual references and review the surrounding journey | Both, each with its own job |
Chromatic supports application flows too#
Chromatic supports Playwright, so it is not limited to Storybook components. You add the Chromatic Playwright package to your tests, and it publishes their output for visual review. Chromatic Playwright setup.
For the checkout, capture the declined-payment state before the test retries. Chromatic supports targeted snapshots during a test. Pick that state on purpose. Don't judge the workflow only by its final confirmation. Targeted snapshots.
You can also inspect Chromatic's captured archives. Chromatic describes them as re-renderable HTML snapshots that include the assets and data needed to reproduce the captured UI. You can inspect them in its web app without rerunning the tests. An archive is a captured state. A Diff Stage recording is the recorded sequence. Chromatic archives.
So Chromatic is a credible option for reviewing full application UI. A Laravel backend doesn't stop a team from maintaining Playwright tests for it.
Diff Stage starts with the Pest journey#
Diff Stage records chosen Pest browser tests and publishes the videos to a hosted player linked from the pull request. The player shows recorded actions, browser problems and the commit under review.
When the flow has an approved baseline, the player puts that recording beside the PR video. Paired playback follows matched actions. When one side has an added or removed step, the other side holds. Reviewers can select an action and watch what happens around it in both recordings.
For the checkout, start at submit and follow the error into the retry. Look at what appears between the states, as well as the states themselves. Decide whether the new placement of the retry control makes recovery easy to follow.
The player does not calculate visual differences. It cannot enforce a reference image or automatically reject a changed color. Reviewers have to watch the relevant part, and they may miss a small visual change.
Choose setup around the suite you already maintain#
If your team already has useful Pest browser tests, Diff Stage records those journeys. Connect the repository through the GitHub App, install the recorder, then set up recording, publishing and default-branch baselines. The installation guide and CI guide cover those steps.
If your team has a Playwright suite, try Chromatic's documented integration against it. If your team uses Storybook, start with Chromatic's quickstart.
Pest uses Playwright internally. Don't assume that makes its PHP tests interchangeable with a JavaScript Playwright Test suite. Check the integration requirements before you plan the work. We are not claiming that no adapter or custom integration could exist.
If your team has no browser tests, plan to write the important flow first. Connecting a repository to a hosting or visual testing service won't choose your fixtures, identify the important outcomes or create coverage.
Baseline approval means different things#
In Diff Stage, the approved baseline for a flow is the latest successful, completed recording on the default branch. When the PR run completes, it pins the comparison. Watching or approving the PR does not promote its video. The next successful default-branch recording does that.
Chromatic's UI Tests use accepted snapshot baselines tracked through branch and Git history. Its UI Review compares branches and uses a different comparison model. Follow Chromatic's documented baseline workflow when you set up reviews. Chromatic branches and baselines.
The two baselines mean different things. A successful Diff Stage baseline run sets the reference behaviour. An accepted Chromatic snapshot sets the expected appearance of a captured state. Neither approval proves every path in the app is correct.
With either tool, treat a baseline change as part of the review decision. Keep behaviour assertions for required outcomes, especially where the screen can't show persistence or side effects.
Estimate the workload before comparing prices#
One recording is not the same as one billed snapshot. Diff Stage's plan allowances cover repositories, stored bytes and uploaded bytes. Chromatic bills snapshots, so usage depends on captured states and configurations. Include CI work in either estimate. Chromatic billing.
Take this example: one repository, 100 recorded builds each month, ten checkout-related flows per build, three visual states per flow and one browser/mode. That gives 1,000 flow recordings versus 3,000 visual captures, if those are the only captures. Before choosing a Diff Stage plan, measure uploaded input bytes separately from stored output bytes, and include retained baselines.
Chromatic's published Free plan includes 5,000 billed snapshots. Its Starter plan is $179 per month with 35,000. Pro is $399 with 85,000. We checked these prices on 7 October 2026. They are not a quote for your workload. Extra states, browsers, modes and other tests change usage. Check the current plans and billing rules before buying. Chromatic pricing.
Don't apply Storybook TurboSnap discounts to that Playwright example. Chromatic documents that TurboSnap is incompatible with Playwright. The example is a planning calculation. It is not measured usage, and it does not prove either product costs less. Playwright integration FAQ.
A fair decision counts maintenance and review work, not only subscriptions. We have not measured those costs here. So we make no claim that either tool saves your team a set amount of time or money.
Try the same review decision#
Pick one real checkout change. Keep fixtures and outcomes the same, capture the relevant states and record the whole recovery journey. Ask a reviewer to make the same decision with each output.
If automated visual comparisons answer your main question, start with Chromatic's supported setup. If your existing Pest suite needs recorded journey review, try Diff Stage with one Pest flow.
If the PR needs both, use screenshots to review the selected states and Diff Stage to review the sequence. Tie each piece of evidence to its recorded revision, and give reviewers a clear reason to inspect it.
